1939 Ariel Square Four 4G Engine Size: 997cc First Produced: 1936
1958 Ariel Square Four
Probably the best know of any of the Ariel motorcycles, the Square Four was manufactured in 500cc & 600cc versions since 1931, production of the legendary 1000cc started in 1937 & continued until 1959. The engine was a four stroke OHV unit coupled to a 4 speed gearbox. It was known for its incredible torque being able to pull away effortlessly in fourth gear. As time went by, various additions & refinements were added which gradually turned this machine a lot more ponderous than it already was. The later models used lighter alloys in the manufacturing process & these are considered to be the best Square Fours ever produced. |
1939 Ariel Red Hunter Engines: 250, 350, 500cc First Produced: 1932
Val Page, the chief designer at the Ariel works was the inspiration behind the first models which led on to several variations through to 1957 when production ceased. The Ariel Red Hunter was considered by many to be the best single cylinder motorcycle on the market for many years. |
1963 Ariel Leader Engine Size: 247cc First Produced: 1958
Inspired by the success in the scooter market in the 50's, Ariel designed the Leader to be a combination of scooter comfort having fully enclosed engine components and wide front fairings, with the larger motorcycle wheels. With its 250cc two stroke engine it was a lively performer and proved very popular with a total of 22,000 built between 1958 - 1965. |
1961 Ariel Arrow Super Sports Engine: 247cc First Produced: 1959
Inspired by Mike O'Rourkes performance in the 1960 Lightweight TT race, this model was also known by some as 'The Golden Arrow'. It had basically the same mechanicals as the Leader model, but without the extra bodywork it was conceived as competition for the new Japanese machines that were now coming onto the UK market. In this regard it failed miserably. |
