1922 Indian Scout Engine Size: 610cc First Produced: 1922
Air cooled, four stroke V twin cilinder side valve engine. This model was developed by Charles B Franklin & was modified several times during the 1920's. Versions with larger engines became the Chief. |
1938 Indian Junior Scout Engines: 500cc First Produced: 1932
Air cooled, four stroke V twin cilinder side valve engine. This model developed during the US depression of the 30's was nicknamed 'The Thrifty Fifty' & was originally sold as the Pony Scout. |
1938 Indian 438 Four Engine Size: 1265cc First Produced: 1927
Air cooled, four stroke 1265cc 4 cilinder inline OHV engine. Over the 11 years prior to the 1938 model there were constant mofifications. This model proved to be the best, it would cruise all day long at 100mph & be just as happy pottering around town in just top gear. |
1949 Indian 149 Arrow Engine: 218cc First Produced: 1948
The single cilinder version of the parallel twin with Amal carburetor & magneto ignition. A number of these models were used by the army, but production only lasted for two years. |
1951 Indian 250 Warrior Engine: 500cc First Produced: 1963
Developed from the previous 249, this model had a vertical twin engine producing 25hp with a top speed of 90mph. The warrior was used extensively by various police departments in the USA. |
1950 Indian Papoose Engine: 98cc First Produced: 1948
Based on the Welbike & made in the UK this model was known as the Brockhouse Corgi & was perhaps the least inspiring of all motorcycles to carry the Indian badge. |
1953 Indian Chief Engine: 1300cc First Produced: 1950
1953 saw the end of both this model & the Indian motorcycle company due to the financial problems it had accumulated. Thereafter several motorcycle manufacturers tried to use the Indian name to enhance their products. |
1959 Royal Enfield Indian Chief Engine: 700cc First Produced: 1959
From 1955 to 1959 Royal Enfield single & twin motorcycles were rebadged & sold as Indians. In 1959 the new Chief was introduced with the vertical twin engine coupled to a 4 speed Albion gearbox. |
