1930 Matchless Silver Arrow Engine Size: 397cc First Produced: 1929
Air cooled, four stroke V twin engine producing 16hp @ 5000rpm. Two models were produced, the 'Standard model' which had acetylene lighting and bulb horn and the 'De Luxe model' which had electric lighting and instrument panel. In 1931 both were designated A/2 and minor changes included a four speed gearbox with improved gear ratios. |
1931 Matchless Silver Hawk Engines: 593cc First Produced: 1931
Air cooled, 4 stroke OHC V 4 cilinder engine mated to a 4 speed Sturmey Archer gearbox. A single overhead camshaft ran across the cylinder head, driven at the right-hand side by a substantial shaft and bevel-gear arrangement. Ignition was by dynamo and coil, the dynamo being driven by skew gearing from the camshaft drive vertical shaft. |
1939 Matchless G90 Super Clubman Engine Size: 498cc First Produced: 1936
Air cooled, 4 stroke single cilinder, twin port engine coupled to a 4 speed transmission. There were four 500cc Clubman models. The fastest model was the Super Clubman: it had a specially tuned engine and polished components such as flywheels, conrods and ports. The top speed was around 90 mph. |
1946 Matchless G80 Engine: 498cc First Produced: 1946
Air cooled, 4 stroke single cilinder pushrod engine coupled to a 4 speed transmission. During the late 40's & early 50s, the most popular British four-strokes were still pushrod singles. During WWII Matchless manufactured 80,000 G3 and G3L models for the armed forces which the G80 was based on. The G3L was the first to feature the "Teledraulic" front forks. |
1953 Matchless G9 Engine: 498cc First Produced: 1948
Air cooled, 4 stroke parallel twin cilinder engine with a 4 speed gearbox. The basic design changed little over the course of its ten year production run, the most significant change was made in 1952 when a new Burman gearbox was fitted. |
1958 Matchless G12 Engine: 646cc First Produced: 1958
Air cooled twin cilinder engine coupled to a 4 speed gearbox producing 35hp @ 6500rpm. Developed in 1958 & aimed at US market, the last G12 was produced in 1966. The Matchless G12 was one of the last motorcycles under the Matchless name and was also produced as the AJS Model 31 by the same company. |
1962 Matchless G50 Engine: 496cc First Produced: 1958
Air cooled single cilinder SOHC engine coupled to a 4 speed gearbox producing 51hp @ 7200rpm. Production ended in 1962 after approximately 180 examples had been built. Today G50's continue to win on the track in classic events. |
1964 Matchless G80 TCS Typhoon Engine: 600cc First Produced: 1960
Air cooled single cilinder pushrod engine coupled to a 4 speed gearbox. The previous 500cc G80 was popular, but by the late fifties American buyers wanted more powerful machines and a limited number of high-performance models were developed for the American market. The new model was G80 TCS Typhoon. |
