Norton, a UK spare parts manufacturer for the bicycle trade, made their first motorcycle in 1902 using a bought in engine. In 1908 Norton developed their own engine & went on to be an extremely successful manufacturer of quality road & race machines. Having been in business since the early 1900's there are many Norton machines & parts still available, so it is well worth a look through Ebay in the countries listed below, you never know what might find!! 1939 Norton International Model 30 Engine Size: 490cc First Produced: 1932
Air cooled, single cylinder 0HC 490cc 4 stroke engine coupled to a 4 speed gearbox & chain drive. The Model 30 represented the 490cc engine & also available was the Model 40 which had a 349cc engine. These machines could be ordered with various bolt on racing accessories. |
1944 Norton 16H Engines: 490cc First Produced: 1942
This model had the 490cc side valve air cooled single cylinder engine & was produced in the thousands for military purposes during WWII. The 'H' designation stands for Home model as opposed to those supplied to the Britich colonies. |
1952 Norton Big Four Engine Size: 633cc First Produced: 1947
Air cooled, four stroke, 633cc, side valve single cylinder engine. This larger engine model was supplied to the military in WWII mainly for use with sidecars. In 1948 a smaller engined version with 596cc capacity was introduced. |
1955 Norton Model 50 Engine: 348cc First Produced: 1933
With a 348cc pushrod OHV four-stroke single cylinder engine producing 18bhp @ 6000rpm coupled to a 4 speed gearbox & chain drive. Few survive in original condition as many were converted into 'Tritons' with Triumph engines. Production ended in 1963 |
1955 Norton Dominator 7 Engine: 497cc First Produced: 1949
The Model 7, had a 497 cc parallel twin engine with iron cylinders and cylinder head coupled to a 4 speed gearbox & chain drive. This model continued in production through to 1955 and was often used with a sidecar, which could not be fitted to the later Featherbed frame Dominators. |
1955 Norton Dominator Model 88 Engine: 349cc First Produced: 1970
Air cooled, 497 cc parallel twin engine with iron cylinders and cylinder head coupled to a 4 speed gearbox & chain drive. This was the first model to use the featherbed frame, but had continual problems with oil leaks from the primary chain case. |
1964 Norton Electra ES 400 Engine: 400cc First Produced: 1963
Air cooled, twin cylinder 4 stroke engine producing 22bhp @ 7000rpm coupled to a 4 speed gearbox & chain drive. This model is based on the earlier Navigator, but has a slightly enlarged engine from 350cc to 400cc & electric start. |
1963 Norton 650SS Engine: 646cc First Produced: 1961
With a 646cc overhead valve, air-cooled parallel twin engine producing 49hp @ 6,800rpm & coupled to a four-speed gearbox & chain final drive. Top speed 110–115 mph (177–185 km/h). |
