The motorcycle division of Yamaha was founded in 1955. Yamaha's initial product was a 125cc two stroke, single cylinder motorcycle, the YA-1, which was a copy of the German DKW RT125. 1955 Yamaha YA1 Engine Size: 123cc First Produced: 1955
Air-cooled, single cylinder 123cc 2-stroke engine coupled a 4 speed gearbox & chain drive. This was the first vehicle in Japan to have a primary kick start system, therefore allowing the engine to be started with the transmission in gear. |
1959 Yamaha YDS1 Engine Size: 247cc First Produced: 1959
Air cooled, 2 stroke parallel twin engine coupled tp a 5 speed transmission with chain drive & producing 18np @ 7500rpm. This model established the pattern for all sporty road bikes for the next 20 years. |
1964 Yamaha YDS3 Engine Size: 247cc First Produced: 1964
Air cooled, 2 stroke parallel twin engine coupled tp a 5 speed transmission with chain drive & producing 24np @ 7500rpm. Developed from the original YDS1, this model was notable because it used the world’s first oil injection lubrication system, Autolube, in a 2-stroke engine. |
1975 Yamaha XS650 Engine: 654cc First Produced: 1968
Air-cooled, parallel twin cylinder engine with a 5 speed transmission & chain drive producing 53bhp @ 7200rpm. This XS650 was the first 4 stroke that Yamaha manufactured & it continued in production with many mods along the way until 1985. |
1972 Yamaha TX750 Engine: 743cc First Produced: 1972
Air-cooled 743cc parallel twin 4 stroke engine coupled to a 5 speed gearbox & chain drive producing 63bhp @ 7500rpm. The TX750 was loosley based on the XS650 but used an Omni Phase Balancer which eliminated vibration from the engine, but the early models suffered problems with this new system. In 1974 it was fixed, but public confidence had been affected & it did not sell well. |
1978 Yamaha SR500 Engine: 499cc First Produced: 1978
Air-cooled, SOHC, single-cylinder, 2-valve engine, 5 speed gearbox & chain drive. The 1978-1979 US version of the SR500 had front and rear disc brakes while the 1980-1981 models had a front disc and rear drum brake, while the European 78-79 model had TLS drum brakes front and rear. |
1981 Yamaha 750 Virago (XV750) Engine: 748cc First Produced: 1981
748 cc air-cooled, 75 degree V-twin, chain driven overhead cam with 2 valves per cylinder. 5 speed gearbox with shaft final drive. Made from 1981 to 1998, it was part of Yamaha's Virago line of cruisers. The maximum speed of the Virago 750 was approximately 180 km/h (110 mph) |
1990 Yamaha 1100 Virago Engine: 1063cc First Produced: 1986
Air-cooled 1063cc V Twin with a 5 speed transmission & shaft drive. It was one of the few cruiser-style motorcycles available with a shaft drive instead of a chain or belt final drive system, as well as a V-twin engine of that size. Its heavily chromed body styling was also distinctive. This was the last of the populaar Virago range & was discontinued in 1990. |
